Viewing forecast data

How do I view forecast data? How do I view forecast data?
Thematic maps are a powerful way to spatially visualise forecast data on the map.
Activate viewing forecasts data by selecting the dataset from the thematic map menu on the left hand panel.
You can select the dataset you wish to view, and the forecast years. You can choose a single year, for example the forecast population at 2030, or choose the change in population where you select a range such as 2021 to 2031.
Once you are happy with your options, select Apply to map.
Using your mouse to hover over areas on the map will provide you with the forecast numbers chosen.

How can I download forecast data? How can I download forecast data?
You can download forecast data based on a custom catchment by exporting a Report.
To do this, first create a catchment (see help on Create a catchment on this page), then execute a report on that catchment. Select Excel as the download type.
Once the file is downloaded, open the document. The first tab is the data disclaimer, the 2nd tab is the report, the 3rd tab is the data.
The data is provided for your selected catchment, and the State benchmark.
Benchmarks are important so you can understand your catchment results in context.

Where can I find forecast write-ups?Where can I find forecast write-ups?
Each time we deliver a new forecast, we write up the story behind the numbers.
These can be found in the below maps or through the Demographic Resource Centre.
Or click on this map to link you to the write up.

Create and edit a Custom catchmentCreate and edit a Custom catchment
The main way to explore our forecast data is to draw a catchment (or set the boundary) for the area that is of importance to you.
To do this we select areas on the map from the Custom Catchment menu on the left panel.
From here you can select areas, and once happy with the selection save the area and generate a report for the catchment.
Watch the video for full details.

What are ABS Standard Statistical AreasWhat are ABS Standard Statistical Areas
State / Territories:
States/Territories are the largest spatial unit in the Australian Bureau of Statistics Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) framework. In aggregate, they cover Australia without gaps or overlaps.
SA4 – Statistical Areas Level 4Statistical Areas Level 4 (SA4) may be defined as regions, and are designed to reflect one or more whole labour markets. SA4s contain populations of over 100,000 people.
SA2 – Statistical Areas Level 2
SA2s are primarily based on State suburbs and localities. In urban areas SA2s largely conform to whole suburbs and combinations of whole suburbs, while in rural areas they define functional zones of social and economic links. SA2s are built up from one or more whole SA1s.
SA1 – Statistical Areas Level 1
The Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1) is the second smallest geographic area defined in the ASGS. The SA1 has been designed for use as the smallest unit for the processing and release of Census data.

What is the difference between SA1 and SAFi?What is the difference between SA1 and SAFi?
Forecast small areas are an .id defined geographic area developed for the purposes of forecasting. They are SA1 derived areas, which are sub SA1 in growth areas and aggregated SA1s in more mature/stable areas. Forecast small areas tend to contain approx. 400 households or 1,000 people.
SAFi is the preferred geography to look at the sequencing and timing of development in growth areas.

Manual versus Auto viewingManual versus Auto viewing
The default setting in .id Placemaker is to show or view the appropriate geographic area for the scale you are viewing the map. This is 'Auto' mode.
If you want to enforce the map to show different areas, you will need to select the Manual setting by clicking on the orange radio button either in the Standard areas panel to the right, or the Layers panel to right.
Turning on the manual setting, also allows you to view multiple areas at once. A tick box becomes available next to each area for you to select.

Viewing forecasts at a different geographyViewing forecasts at a different geography
In Auto mode, forecast data is presented at a default scale.
If you want to force the forecast data to be viewed at a different geography or area you need to enable Manual mode (above tip)
1. Open the 'Areas' panel
2. Select the icon to the right of the layer name to 'Apply dataset to area'. In the image below forecasts are presented at SA4 level, as the icon is red. To change the view to show forecasts at SA2, click the icon highlighted to change it.
