The curious concept of “giving back”.
Having entered my 60’s, I frequently hear the term “I’m giving back”, which is surely a good thing.
But cynical me thinks, “Oh, then you must have been taking for a while”.
There is no need for any enterprise to just “take”, but plenty do. That is their culture and modus operandi. But that is an old-skool and unimaginative way to turn a dollar.
Delivering value that benefits not just customers, employees, and shareholders, but the community at large - these are the characteristics of a thriving contemporary enterprise.
An enterprise that considers the community as stakeholders as much as the customers, shareholders and employees will also attract the best professionals, which is a recipe for success. These people are driven by purpose, and they understand how to deliver value sustainably, creating a virtuous cycle of profitability and a business that consistently thrives.
Giving back is fine, but consistently and purposefully delivering value to ALL stakeholders is the only way to go.
