Catchment area analysis for local governments
Understand service demand and coverage
Where are the gaps in service in your LGA? What is the community makeup of those within (or outside) a catchment area?
Combining spatial and demographic analysis is an essential first step in addressing service gaps within the community. As leading experts on local-area analysis, .id (informed decisions), are here to help you allocate local government resources to bring the best outcomes for your communities.
Use cases
This method of analysis can be applied in various ways.
Catchment assessment
What is the profile of people within an existing facility's catchment area?
Service assessment
How is a service provided across an area? Where are the gaps in service? Who is affected by those gaps? Are some areas being overserviced?
New developments
Locate the best site and build an evidence-based business case for new facilities.
Catchment area / service level analysis can be utilised for a wide range of local government responsibilities.

Methodology
.id has been working with local government for more than 25 years. We pride ourselves on working collaboratively with our partner councils.
-
We understand your problemWe understand your problem
An initial phone or video call to understand the question or issue you're grappling with, and openly assess how we might best help.
-
We define the relevant asset(s), geographies and populationsWe define the relevant asset(s), geographies and populations
Asset(s)
What sites or facilities are we looking at? This might be a single place or multiple sites across the LGA.
Is there a maximum, minimum or preferred capacity related to each site? (eg How many children can a childcare facility accommodate?)
Catchment geography
How is the catchment area of a site defined? This might be simple geographic distance or defined by something more complex, such as walking, driving or public transport times.Relevant population
What is the relevant population for a facility. For a childcare centre, this may be children aged 0 to 5 years.
From some projects, the question might be reversed: what is the demographic profile of people in the catchment area of a given facility.

We give you optionsWe give you options
We give you clear options that put you in control of the scope and budget for a project before work starts.
-
We do the work while staying in touchWe do the work while staying in touch
This will generally involve the following.
- Mapping the asset(s).
- Defining the catchments
- Filtering by population types.
We can also factor in service levels if required for a project.
We keep in touch throughout this process, eliciting feedback along the way.
-
We deliverWe deliver
Project outputs will generally include maps, written analysis and a presentation / workshop.
